The Transformers series has been a box office mainstay for several decades, while the tale of the Decepticons and Autobots has taken some bizarre turns. Transformers: The Rise of the Beasts, which is a movie inspired by the legendary Beast Wars tale, is set to push the live-action flicks even further beyond its fantastical limits. An entire year before the movie hits theaters, it’s evident that there is a lot more of the storyline in store. Rise of the Beasts would be the first installment in a new trilogy, according to Paramount’s Investor Day briefing on Tuesday. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is to be set in the year 1994 and will feature two humans from Brooklyn who become involved in an ancient struggle between three Transformer tribes. Steven Caple Jr. will direct the movie. On top of Peter Cullen, who has voiced Optimus Prime in several iterations of the series, the film is slated to feature Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, as well as Dominique Fishback, Anthony Ramos, Tobe Nwigne and Luna Lauren Velez. Beast Wars brought some now-iconic Transformer figures to the mix, with Megatron and Optimus Prime serving as the two major characters, as always.

The trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has smashed a viewership record for Paramount. The film is the seventh entry in the live-action Transformers universe, adapted from the 1984 toy line of the same name that features extraterrestrial robots who can change forms and was featured in many animated series in the proceeding years. The live-action branch of the franchise began with Michael Bay’s 2007 film Transformers, which was followed by four sequels and the prequel Bumblebee in 2018.

Last week, after the trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts gave fans their initial glimpse at the first film in the franchise in five years, the viewership numbers for the video skyrocketed. According to Paramount’s calculations (per The Wrap), the trailer was viewed 494 million times across the world in its first week. This is more than the trailers for the hotly anticipated films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (182 million) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (77 million) put together.
