“Love and Summer” By William Trevor
“Love and Summer” is a novel by William Trevor about the life of Ellie Dillahan, a young woman living in a small Irish town in the 1950s. The story begins with Ellie’s marriage to Florian Kilderry, a wealthy man who is much older than her. Despite their age difference, Ellie is deeply in love with Florian and is happy to be married to him.
However, their happiness is short-lived, as Florian dies suddenly just a few months into their marriage, leaving Ellie alone and grief-stricken. As she tries to come to terms with her loss, Ellie begins to notice a change in the way that she is perceived by the people in her community. No longer seen as a young, married woman, she is now viewed as a vulnerable, widowed woman who needs to be protected.
As the years pass, Ellie finds herself increasingly isolated and lonely. She spends her days tending to her garden and taking care of her home, but has little contact with others. One day, she meets Fr. Flynn, a young, charismatic priest who is new to the town. Fr. Flynn is kind and compassionate, and he and Ellie quickly become friends.
As their friendship deepens, Ellie begins to open up to Fr. Flynn about her past and her feelings of loneliness and isolation. She confides in him about her love for Florian and her regrets about not having had the chance to have children. Fr. Flynn listens patiently and offers her comfort and support.
As the summer draws to a close, Fr. Flynn is transferred to a new parish and Ellie is left alone once again. However, their friendship has given her the strength and courage to move on and find happiness in the future. The novel ends with Ellie looking back on her life and realizing that, despite all the hardships she has faced, she has been blessed with love and happiness.
